Darlene Mae Groe
(December 21, 1927 - May 31, 2013)

Darlene M. Groe, age 85, of Lake Mills, died on Friday, May 31, 2013, at her home.

Darlene Mae (Fosnes) Groe was born on December 21, 1927, in Lake Mills, Iowa, to Amund and Sarah (Anderson) Fosnes. Baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, she graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1945.

The following year, Darlene married Adrian C. Saxerud on September 1, 1946, at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills. From this union came her beloved sons, John Robert and Wayne C. Saxerud. Unfortunately, Adrian passed away in 1979, but Darlene was blessed to find new love with Ronald O. Groe. They married on September 5, 1981.

Involved in the historical society, bridge clubs, church circles, and the fine arts guild among other activities and clubs, Darlene loved being an integrated part of the Lake Mills community.

A devoted Norwegian Lutheran through and through, Darlene loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In the words of Martin Luther, she was “simultaneously Saint and Sinner.” She perceived the world in terms of black and white with no grey areas. Very serious about her Christianity and also very serious about her humor, she became the woman we adored!

Darlene is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Gayle Saxerud, of San Jose, California; her grandchildren, Erik and Andrea Saxerud and Natalie, Mike, and Joey Unruh; her special nephews, Dennis “Deke” (Sue) Miller, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Ron (Jean) Miller, of Joice, Iowa; along with many other extended relatives and special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Adrian Saxerud; her second husband, Ronald Groe; her son, John Robert Saxerud; four sisters; and two brothers.

Special thanks to all of Darlene’s caregivers, Veronica, Erma, Brenda, Willie, and the Winnebago County home health care staff and Hospice of North Iowa staff as well as all the other volunteers, who so lovingly allowed her to remain in her home per her wishes.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon and Pastor W. Paul Weeg officiating. Inurnment will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lake Mills. Memorial visitation will be on Monday, June 10, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
