Irene Elvira Dolen Wacholz, 83, died on Monday, May 19, 2003, at her home in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Irene Dolen Wacholz was born on June 16, 1919, in Winnebago County, Iowa, to Maynard and Jennie (Langfald) Maakestad. Baptized and confirmed at Center Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, she also married John Dolen there on January 1, 1938. Irene and John made their home on the family farm just outside Lake Mills.

After her marriage, Irene joined the North Prairie Lutheran Church, becoming an active member of the Ladies Aid Society and the Circle. Besides helping with the dairy farming operation, she also sold Avon, worked at Deluxe Manufacturing, and then, at Larson Manufacturing in Lake Mills.

On Nov. 21, 1992, Irene married Maynard Wacholz. They, subsequently, made their new home in Albert Lea closer to their children. Irene loved golfing, bowling, and playing cards with her friends from Lake Mills and Albert Lea as well as quilting and crocheting. She took her greatest pride, however, in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Irene is survived by a son, Allen Dolen, and his wife, Susan, of Bettendorf, Iowa, and their children, Korina, and her husband, Todd Carlson, of Waterloo, Iowa, Kodey Dolen, and his wife, Sandy, and Kyle and Kaelan Dolen, also of Bettendorf; a daughter, Patricia, and her husband, Allen Johnson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and their children, Bret Johnson, and his wife, Michele, of Kasson, and Mat Johnson, and his wife, Christine, of La Crescent; her stepchildren: Maxine Wacholz, of Albert Lea, and Harlan Wacholz, and his wife, Cindy, of Alden, and their children, Wayne Wacholz, of Walters, and Lori, and her husband, Tom Koerber, of Glenville; her brother, Duane Maakestad, and his wife, Jean, of Fairmont; her sisters: Opal Browning, of Mason City, Iowa, and Adoline, and her husband, Dale Martinson, of Radcliff, Iowa; and her brother-in-law, Eldon Willis, and his wife, Carole, of Forest City, Iowa; as well as four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John Dolen and Maynard Wacholz; and one brother and two sisters.

A very caring and loving person, Irene will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.

Funeral services for Irene Dolen Wacholz, age 83, of Albert Lea, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 22, 2003, at North Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, Iowa, the Rev. Randall Baldwin officiating. Interment will be in the North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00-8:00 p.m. today, May 21, 2003, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.
