Paul E. Rygh
(December 9, 1926 - March 29, 2013)

Paul E. Rygh, 86, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Friday, March 29, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Paul Edward Rygh was born on December 9, 1926, in Norway Township, rural Winnebago County, the son of Selmer and Elizabeth (Gunvordahl) Rygh. He was baptized and confirmed at Lime Creek Lutheran Church and graduated from Emmons High School in 1944.

Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and played trombone in the 324th ASF Band, Aberdeen, Maryland. Following his honorable discharge in 1947, he attended Waldorf College where he studied music and religion and later enrolled in MacPhail’s College of Music, becoming a certified piano technician.

On December 27, 1959, Paul married Marcia Jean Mitchell at Grundy Center United Methodist Church, Grundy Center, Iowa. They were blessed to raise three children, Beth, Ed, and Bill and their grand-daughter, Krista.

Paul had a love for his family, for music, for the land, and for his cattle. He was a Winnebago County Fair Board member for over thirty-five years, a 4-H Leader, and a Sunday school teacher. He was an active member of Lime Creek and Emmons Lutheran Churches, a member of Ginny, Ginny & Company, the Emmons Legion, the Winnebago County Beef Producers, and the Winnebago County Republicans. He enjoyed reading, tuning pianos, singing, gardening, working on show cattle, and drinking coffee with friends. He is remembered for his careful tending of the lawn and garden at the Rygh Family Farm and his appreciation for people. Perhaps most of all, he enjoyed conversation with friends and family.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Marcia, of Lake Mills, Iowa; his children, Beth (Craig) Lamoureux, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Edward (Mary) Rygh, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and William (Laurie) Rygh, of Lake Mills, Iowa; his grandchildren, Krista (Deke) Reeder, of Glenville, Minnesota, Molly and Blake Lamoureux; and Lewis, Sonja, Carson, Allison, Justin, Lane, and Jesse Rygh; his great-grandchildren, Mason and Makenna Reeder; his sister, Barbara Crawford, of Des Moines, Iowa; and his brother-in-law, Vincent Olson, of Eagle Grove, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Margaret Olson; his brother, Earl Rygh; two infant grandchildren, Alicia and Wyatt Rygh; his sister-in-law, Lorraine (Rygh) Buntenbach; and his brother-in-law, Eugene Crawford.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, Minnesota, with Rev. Christopher W. Martin officiating. Visitation is from 5:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at Lime Creek (Stateline) Cemetery in rural Emmons, Minnesota, with the Emmons Louis Tveite American Legion Post #317 performing military rites at the gravesite.
