(September 1, 1944 - February 22, 2013)Willy Hassebroek, age 68, of Buffalo Center, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013.
Wilbert "Willy" Dean Hassebroek was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa, to Marvin and Margaret Hassebroek on September 1, 1944. He left the area at age seventeen to join the Army after his father's passing. In 1966, he returned to Buffalo Center after being stationed overseas. He, then, married Nancy Anderson on February 24, 1968. Four children were born to this union: Jill, who died in infancy, Jeff, Daniel, and Jane. Willy and Nancy had lived on their current acreage since 1971 where they raised their family.
In his earlier years, Willy worked at Winnebago Industries and briefly went on an adventure to work for Boeing in Seattle, Washington, before returning home. During the course of his life, he embarked on many business ventures including J&J Livestock, Hassebroek Trucking, and family farming.
His other involvements in the community included starting the Buffalo Center Development Corp. and Bison Limited to bring new business to town. A member of the American Legion in Buffalo Center, he took pride in his country and loved the flag. He was also an avid bowler, snowmobiler, trap shooter, and card player in his earlier days.
Later, after becoming a grandpa, Willy enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren with toys, trips, and shopping escapades to the Weaver's. He also enjoyed spending much of his spare time with his fellow coffee drinkers solving "the world's problems" at the "round table." He enjoyed taking many trips with his wife and visiting longtime friends all around the states.
Willy was proceeded in death by his parents, Marvin and Margaret; his daughter, Jill Marie; his brother, Bob Hassebroek. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hassebroek; his sons, Jeff Hassebroek, of Dike, and Daniel Hassebroek (special friend Trisha Jobe), of Buffalo Center; his daughter, Jane Nelson (Nathan), of Forest City; his grandchildren, Emily, Drew, Adam, and Carter Hassebroek, of Dike, Katie, Justin, and Kevin Hassebroek, of Thompson, and Lilian and Alexis Nelson, of Forest City; his siblings, Marlyn (Ruth) Hassebroek, Shirley (Mark) Eisenbarth, Dennis (Nola) Hassebroek, and Elaine (Roger) Wilcox.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at 11:00 AM at the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center. Military honors will be presented by the Buffalo Center American Legion/V.F.W. Color Guard. A visitation will be held on Monday at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
