November 16, 1925 - May 8, 2006Maxine C. Olson, age 80, of Leland, died Monday, May 8, 2006, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.
Maxine C. Olson was born in Forest City, Iowa, on November 16, 1925, the daughter of Melvin and Gladys (Hanna) Knudtson. Baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, she received her education in the Forest City school system. After graduating from Forest City High School, she began teaching in rural schools in Winnebago County. She also worked at Lynn’s Department Store in Forest City where she did clothing alterations.
On December 31, 1950, she married Raymond Olson at Winnebago Lutheran Church. The couple began farming near Northwood and subsequently lived in several area communities before making their home in Leland in the mid-1950s.
Through the years, Maxine worked for Dr. Mangan, Waldorf College, and the Winnebago County Treasurers office. She owned and operated the Mitz & Bertís Café in Leland, a 24 hour truck stop, and was appointed Winnebago County Treasurer. Before retiring, she also worked for Holland Contracting.
An involved member of her community and her church, Maxine was active with the Leland Museum, the Historical Society, the Women’s Federated Club, and the Retired School Teachers organization. As the family historian, she enjoyed scrapbooking, collecting, and organizing news articles and photographs on a wide variety of interests. She enjoyed cake decorating, mint-making, and quilting for her family and friends.
Maxine is survived by her children: Michael (Lee) Olson, of Mason City, Audrey (Gailard) Fischer, of Burnsville, Minnesota, Karen (Duane) Roll, of Leland, Kenneth Olson, of Leland, Sherryl Olson, of Forest City, and Sandra (Raymond) Squier, of Mason City; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Weir, of Clear Lake, and Roselyn McKittrick, of Milan, Indiana.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; and two brothers, Edward and Karl Knudtson.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2006, at 1:30 PM at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Leland, Iowa, with Rev. Clarence Baalson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery in rural Leland. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home and an hour prior to service at the church.
