(March 10, 1928 - November 12, 2012)Robert L. Thompson, age 84, of Lake Mills, died Monday, November 12, 2012, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Robert LeRoy Thompson was born on March 10, 1928, in Mansfield Township, rural Freeborn County, Minnesota, the son of Alfred and Clara (Martinson) Thompson. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, he graduated from Lake Mills High School with the “Class of 1947.”
On September 10, 1950, Bob married Betty Mae Jensen at Calvary Baptist Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Bob loved his family and always strove to attend family events and activities whenever possible. Blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, he was a “well known Jokester.” Always more concerned with others than with himself, he found good in everyone and befriended all he met.
Bob had a love for the land and the farm he called home for so many years. A 4H Leader for over twenty-five years, an active member of Salem Lutheran Church and the church choir, a member of Ginny, Ginny & Company, and the Tapestry Singers, he generously contributed back to his community. He enjoyed bowling, dancing, playing cards, and drinking coffee with friends.
He is remembered for “staying the course” no matter how tough things got.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Betty, of Lake Mills, Iowa; his children, Allan Thompson, of Daytona Beach, Florida, Janie (Nathan) Koeppen, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Jon (Andrea) Thompson, of Collierville, Tennessee, and Randy Thompson, of Dubuque, Iowa; his grandchildren, Tobin Thompson, Nicholas Koeppen, Nicole (Grant) Thompson, Jacob Koeppen, Sarah and Annika Thompson, and Derek (Alison) Thompson; his great-grandchildren, Anthony Swank, Mackenzie Koeppen, and Gavin, Lincoln, Sydney, and Elena Thompson; his sister, Ruth (Dr. Cameron) Hill, of Casa Grande, Arizona, his sisters-in-law, Marge Thompson, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Wilma Thompson, of Madison, South Dakota, Alice Rasmusson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Helen Jensen, of Daytona Beach, Florida; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Beth Ann Thompson; his brothers, Marvin, Arvid, and Roger; and one sister, Senora Moen.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 16, 2012, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor Denise Anderson officiating. Burial will take place in Salem Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Thursday, November 15, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa, and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
