November 12, 1921 - September 28, 2012FOREST CITY - Carroll N. Sougstad, 90, of Forest City, died Friday, September 28, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.
Carroll was born on November 12, 1921, to Edward and Ora Mae (Wicks) Sougstad in Fulton, South Dakota. He graduated from high school in Fedora, South Dakota, and from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota, as well as from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado, with a Master's degree in Music Education.
On June 4, 1950, he married Arlene Willeman at the Hyde Park Methodist Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. They had three children, Mark, Steve, and Joyce. He taught instrumental and vocal music in several communities in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. One of his former students established a scholarship in his name for a Lake Preston, South Dakota, high school student pursuing a degree in music. He also worked at Winnebago Industries until his retirement. A member of Sig's Band, the Lions Club, and Immanuel Lutheran Church for more than thirty years, he enjoyed singing and attending concerts, reunions, and a variety of community events. Always supporting his grandchildren in their activities, he earned an award from the Forest City Sports Boosters for his dedication.
He is survived by sons, Mark Sougstad, of Dallas, Oregon, and Steven Sougstad, of Forest City; his daughter, Joyce (Neal) Flugum, of Forest City; his grandchildren: Amy (Jeremy) Wagner; Cory, Tait (Elissa), Randy (Sarah), William, and Emma Sougstad; Gary and Andrew Flugum, and Lyndi (Jerre) Flugum-Collins; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Mehus, of Missoula, Montana; and two sisters-in-law, Joann (John) Townsend, of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Venita Leiffring, of Prairie Village, Kansas; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; his sisters, Merle and Jean; his brothers, Edward, Eldon, and Orris, and an infant grandson, Brett.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be 2:30 P.M., Tuesday, at Harrison Township Cemetery, Swea City, Iowa.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.Copyright © 2012, Petersen Lund Funeral Home
