FOREST CITY - Merlyn Heimdal, 77, of Forest City, died Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Merlyn Robert Hoff Heimdal was born on May 20, 1934, to George and Mabel Slattum Hoff in Mason City, Iowa. Because of his mother’s losing her sight, Annie Tweed Heimdal, of Joice, Iowa, took on the responsibility of raising him when he was ten months old, and later, Almer and Clara Heimdal, of Joice, Iowa, adopted him. He graduated from Joice High School in 1952. From 1956 to 1958, he served in the army while stationed in Germany.

On November 28, 1961, Merlyn married Marilyn Witham of Lake Mills. To this union were born five daughters: Teresa, Tanya, Valerie and Victoria (twins), and Natalie. The couple farmed south west of Joice for fifteen years before moving to Forest City in 1976. In 1980, they divorced and then remarried on February 12, 2011.

Merlyn is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his daughters, Teresa (Bill) Clausen, of Mason City, Iowa, Tanya (Dale) Borg, of Forest City, Iowa, Valarie (Craig) Swalve, of Garner, Iowa, Victoria (Randy) Hopp, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Natalie (Jerry) Black, of Chandler, Arizona; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brother, Bernard Hoff, of Belmond, Iowa; and his father- and mother-in-law, Robert and Myrtle Witham, of Lake Mills, Iowa.

Merlyn was preceded in death by both his parents and his adoptive parents; one sister, Violet; and one brother, Dick.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 2, 2011, at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in rural Joice, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Olson officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Lutheran Brethren Cemetery in rural Joice, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark Street, Forest City, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Merlyn Heimdal Memorial Fund, c/o Marilyn Heimdal, 115 Sunland Way, Forest City, Iowa 50436, to be distributed to Merlyn's preferred charities.
