Alva Victoria Sorenson
(March 6, 1912 - October 23, 2011)Alva V. Sorenson, age 99, of Lake Mills, died Sunday, October 23, 2011, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Alva Victoria (Heltne) Sorenson was born on March 6, 1912, on the Heltne family farm in Silver Lake Township, Worth County, Iowa, to Gilbert and Lena (Evenson) Heltne. She was baptized and confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Silver Lake, Iowa. When Alva was nine years old, her mother died.
As a child, Alva attended Dahl Country School #4 and went on to attend Lake Mills High School, graduating in 1931.
On March 17, 1940, Alva married Juell Sorenson. The couple lived in rural Lake Mills where Juell farmed and Alva made their house a home. Alva and Juell rarely missed a musical event at the high school or at Salem Church, and they enjoyed going to dances.
Alva was a caring and selfless person her entire life, devoting her time and talents to her family and loving her grandchildren. A skilled artist of Norwegian Hardanger embroidery, Alva also enjoyed baking, canning, gardening. Active with the circle and altar guild, Alva was a member of Salem Lutheran Church for sixty-two years.
Survivors include four children, LaVonne (Samuel) Gray, of Anaheim Hills, California, Wava (Berdell) Ahrens, of Rudd, Iowa, Julane Sorenson, of Silvis, Illinois, and John (Patricia) Sorenson, of Mankato, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Michelle (Greg) Curtis, Mark (Jerilyn) Benson, Julie (Keith) Trautman, Ranae (Charles) Ahrens-Cashin, Jeffrey Ahrens, Brian (Darcie) Ahrens, Paul (Kerry) Sorenson, Micalla (Justin) Sanford, and Michael (Melanie) Cords; sixteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.
Alva was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Lena; her husband, Juell; her brothers, Ardell, in infancy, and Palmer, and his wife, Grace (Hanson); her sisters, Gladys, and her husband, Maurice Severson, and Valborg, and her husband Lee Campbell.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Burial will take place in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
