Harold Duane “Dewey” Thorson, 56, of Joice, Iowa, lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Harold Duane “Dewey” was born on September 17, 1954, in Forest City, Iowa, to Harold and Cora (Kloster) Thorson. He attended school in Lake Mills and earned a GED in 1988.

Duane served in the United States Navy from 1973 to 1975. A man with many talents, he worked for various industries. He was a mechanic, but he loved farming most of all. Indeed, he worked for Hanna Farms for eleven years.

Dewey married Darla Monson on May 29, 1976. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family, especially his grandchildren, fishing, watching football, especially when the Green Bay Packers were playing, and tinkering with whatever his hands could get a hold of.

Survivors include his wife, Darla, of Joice, Iowa; three daughters, Jennifer (Brad Hacker) Thorson, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Brenda (Barry) Henderson, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Wendy (Bill Nolton) Thorson, of Forest City, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Madison, Khira, Max, Ashley, Riley, Alex, Tyler, and Samuel; his brothers and sisters, Donna (Robert) Rupe, of Hastings, Minnesota, Don (Kathie) Thorson, of Forest City, Iowa, Ollie (JoAnn) Thorson, of Scarville, Iowa, and Diane (John) Awe, of Leland, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.

Dewey was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Cora; a nephew, Rodney Neumann; along with other aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, Iowa, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. The American Legion Otto Chose Post #235 will conduct Military honors. Burial will take place in Mount Valley Bethel Township Cemetery, rural Forest City, Iowa.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 1, 2011, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
