Gro Solberg Bergo
(February 12, 1919 - September 20, 2010)Gro S. Bergo, age 91, of Lake Mills, died Monday, September 20, 2010, at Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Gro Solberg (Sherven) Bergo was born on February 12, 1919, the only child of Hermund and Bella (Lansrud) Sherven, in Worth County, Iowa. As she grew, she attended Sion Lutheran Church east of Lake Mills and graduated from Lake Mills High School. After teacher’s training at Luther College in Decorah, Gro taught for several years in a small country school.
Gro was united in marriage with Norris Bergo, and they began farming and raising their family east of Lake Mills. The family soon moved to a farm close to Leland, Iowa, where they farmed until retirement.
Their family income was supplemented by Gro’s employment as a bookkeeper at the Cooperative Services Incorporated in Lake Mills for many years. Following her retirement, she moved into a small house in town where she lived for the past twenty-one years.
While living in Lake Mills, Gro was active with various volunteer projects: she had been an officer and was currently a life member at the Lake Mills Senior Center; she was involved with the Lake Mills American Legion Auxiliary; she taught Sunday school at Winnebago Lutheran Church; and she used her time and talents with her church circle at Winnebago Lutheran. Gro was a humble person by nature, devoted to her family and friends, and truly loved her Lord.
Survivors include her three children, Harlan Bergo of Arcata, California, Belinda (Mark) Hanna of Forest City, Iowa, and Dave (Denise) Bergo of Plymouth, Minnesota; and seven grandchildren and their families: Christopher (Lacey) Bergo and children, Cassandra, Kyle, Blake, Gretchen, and Christopher, Jr.; Chad (Krissie) Bergo and son, Seth; Heather Bergo; Andrew Hanna; Philip Hanna; Gretchen (Brent) Wegner and daughter, Gemma; and Stephanie Bergo. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mavis Bergo of Lake Mills, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norris, and a grandson Michael.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, September 24, 2010, at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Burial will take place in Winnebago Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Thursday, September 23, 2010, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
