Arlene Nyguard
(Died July 10, 2010)

Arlene Nyguard, age 95, of Lake Mills, IA, formerly of Thompson, IA, died at Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, IA, on July 10, 2010.

On the family farm, three and a half miles south of Story City, Iowa, Cora (Madden) and Ulysses Grant Brown had a baby girl on April 2, 1915, and they named her Arlene.

In her youth, she attended country school and also Gilbert School in Gilbert, Iowa. Many of Arlene’s fondest memories were the days and evenings spent swimming with her brothers and sisters at Lake Comar, just a half mile north of the Brown farm. Arlene was a self-taught swimmer and throughout her life enjoyed swimming and did so every chance she got. Throughout her life, Arlene also enjoyed walking, biking, gardening, and reading. She played both the piano and organ.

After graduating from high school in Story City and working for a short time in Des Moines, Arlene married Silas Nyguard on June 30, 1937. After having two daughters, Marilyn (Doyle) and Patricia (McGuire) and one son, Phillip, they moved to a farm southeast of Thompson, Iowa, in 1946. Soon after they had their fourth child and second son, Wayne. Arlene spent most of her time as a mother and farmwife. She also worked part-time at Thompson Produce and at a sweet corn factory in Bricelyn, Minnesota. After retiring from the farm in 1979 and moving into Thompson, Arlene still worked part-time cleaning houses and filling in at the town library.

Arlene was a long-time member of the Bethany Lutheran Church. She served as a sponsor of the Luther League, was a member of Ruth Circle and Ladies Aide, was on the church council, and helped serve on numerous committees in the church.

Arlene is survived by her four children: Marilyn Doyle of West Des Moines, Iowa; Pat McGuire of Algona, Iowa; Phillip (Joyce) of Des Moines, Iowa; and Wayne (Judy) of Lake Mills, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Monica (Donald) Behning; Todd (Jessica) Doyle; Matt (Jenny) Doyle; Mark (Melissa) McGuire; Shirley (Jeff) Karhoff; Kevin (Jodi) McGuire; Dan (Rachel) McGuire; Christopher (Beth) Nyguard; and Monty Nyguard. She was also blessed with 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ruth Miller and Vera Brown, and brothers Ralph, Homer, Reno, Dwight, Orson, and Paul, her husband Silas, and son-in-law John McGuire.

Funeral Services for Arlene will be held Tuesday July 13, 2010, at 10:30 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Rev. Mark Decker officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Friends and Family may attend her visitation on Monday July 12, 2010, at Winter Funeral Home in Thompson from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and also one hour before the service at the church.

Blessed is the memory of Arlene Brown Nyguard. You’re in our heart, you’re in our soul.
