Vernon O.S. Heimdal, age 77, of Lake Mills, died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, Iowa.

Vernon Oriss Schwenly Heimdal was born on January 10, 1933, on a farm in rural Joice, Iowa, to Orin and Gertrude Marie (Ness) Heimdal. He was baptized at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church. He attended Larson school and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1950.

Vernon worked for Abraham’s Store in Joice until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1952. He served in the medical corps in Korea. He was released from active duty in November of 1954 and served in the reserves until he was honorably discharged in 1961.

Vernon attended Mankato Vocational School for auto body repair. He worked for S & R Chevrolet and Birum Olson Buick in Mason City. In 1963, he moved to San Diego, California, where he also worked in auto body. From 1965 until 1991, Vernon was a factory representative for Buske Industries, traveling extensively, primarily in Illinios, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania.

In 1983, he bought his parents’ home in Lake Mills and lived there until entering the IOOF Home in Mason City on April 15, 2010.

He was dedicated and proud of his lifetime membership with the Mason City VFW Post #733, the Emmons American Legion, the Eagles Club in Mason City, and the Elks in Albert Lea.

Survivors include his two brothers, Dean (Gloria) Heimdal of Clear Lake, IA, and Lowell (Evelyn) Heimdal of Joice, IA; a sister-in-law, Marge Heimdal of Unionville, MO; eleven nieces and nephews; and many grand- and great-grand-nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his mother Marie in 1980; father, Orin in 1983; and his brother, Royden in April of 2008.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, rural Joice, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Olson officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Mason City VFW.

Visitation with family and friends will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
