(September 6, 1913 - February 20, 2010)FOREST CITY - Mary Peterson, age 96 of Forest City, died Saturday, February 20, 2010, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City, Iowa.
Mary Arlene Peterson, daughter of James and Marie (Vavrina) Benesh, was born September 6, 1913, in Chicago, Illinois. She was baptized at St. Procopius Catholic Church in Chicago. At the age of five, she moved with her parents and brothers to a farm west of Garner after living in the Duncan and Britt area. Later she moved to the Hayfield area where she attended Hayfield Consolidated School and graduated from Hayfield High School in 1933.
She was united in marriage to Raymond A. Peterson on March 10, 1938, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, IA. She and her husband resided in the Hayfield area for many years. Mary enjoyed gardening, cooking and her family. She worked for many families in the area and also worked at the Summit Printing Company for 21 years. She and her husband wintered in Tempe, Arizona, for 15 years following her retirement. She became a resident of Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City, Iowa, in 2003.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Marylou (Dave) Maklenburg, of Mason City, IA, and son Marvin (Linda) Peterson of Clearwater, FL. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Doran Maklenburg of Mason City, IA; Marcie (Tim) Whitney of Rochester, MN; Sara (Del) Mulholland; Laura (Joel) Conklin and Glenn Peterson, all of Clearwater, FL: four great-grandsons, Kaleb and Jacob Peterson, Tyler and Reese Conklin and a great-granddaughter, Emily Peterson: two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Judith Peterson of Britt, IA; niece Marlys Clark of Fertile, IA; nephews Allan (Mary Louise) Peterson of Mobile, AL, and Gaylon (Ann) Peterson of Miami, FL.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Raymond on July 20, 1993, and brothers James and Joseph Benesh.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rodd Hopp officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N Clark St., Forest City, IA, and will continue an hour prior to service at the church.
