NELSON, SORBON, SCAR

Nelson, N.I., merchant -- Lake Mills -- born 1 June, 1857, in Calmar, Winneshiek county, Iowa. His father came from Norway to this country in 1849, his mother arriving in 1855.

Young Nelson received a common and commercial school education; settled with his parents in St. Ansgar, Iowa, when ten years of age; learned the carpenter's trade; commenced to clerk in a hardware store in Osage at the age of twenty-five; moved to Lake Mills in 1886, and went into partnership with Ole Scar. They are doing the largest general merchandise business in the city, besides being engaged in a canning factory and cold storage, and are by far the most important business men in town.

Nelson is a member of the United Norwegian Church; has been elected mayor of the town twice; and was married in 1883 to Annie Christine Sorbon. They have two children.
