Virgil Hess, 80, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. He was born April 16, 1930, in Williams, Iowa to Virgil and Frances Hess. Virgil was a graduate of Dows High School. He worked for Northland Dairy, Corwin Cleaners and Bambino's Restaurant in Des Moines. Virgil also owned and operated Fence Masters of Iowa from 1973 to 1999.

He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. Virgil enjoyed fishing at Leech Lake in Minnesota, camping, woodworking, attending his grandchildren's sporting events, going to auctions, garage sales, and celebrating Christmas Eve with his family.

Virgil is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Linda; daughters, Teri Berglund of Ankeny, Kathy Miller (Larry) of Ft. Dodge, and Jody Johnson (Larry) of Ankeny; grandchildren, Chad Berglund (Daeneile), Amber Medici (Mike), Todd Miller (Jonnell), Nathan Miller (Denise), Mathew, Ashley, and Cody Johnson; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Hess (Julia) of Iowa Falls, and Richard Hess (Mary Lou) of North Ft. Myers, Florida; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Gardalen; and brother, James Hess.

A memorial service will be 12 p.m., Friday, October 15, 2010, at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, with burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
