John S. Arnett Dies Today at The Age of 95
Was the Last of Civil War Veterans in Fort Dodge
February 4, 1935

John S. Arnett, the last of Fort Dodge’s Civil war veterans, died at 11:00 a.m. today at the home of his son Alva A. Arnett, 1602 Fifth Avenue South, with whom he made his home. He was 95 years, 10 months and 9 days old.
Heart trouble caused his death. He was walking around the room at the time, supported by his son when he seized with the attack. He was helped to a char and died almost instantly.

Death Expected

Mr. Arnett has been failing since Christmas so his death was not unexpected. He was still able to be up and around, preferring to be active rather than leading the life of an invalid. He liked to walk, believing that keeping on his feet he was helping to fight off approaching invalidism. This morning he asked his son to help him walk around the room and he was on his feet when he was stricken.

Mr. Arnett lived in Fort Dodge since 1879. He had a long war record having served for three years in Company H of the 77th Illinois regiment. He enlisted in1862 and took part in 13 battles of the Civil war, among them were the battle of Vicksburg , which lasted forty days and forty nights. Other prominent ones in which he fought were the Black River campaign, Buzzards Rush and the Red River campaign.

Mr. Arnett’s death was the second in Fort Dodge’s Civil war ranks within the year, the death of H.C. Eddy a few weeks ago depleted the ranks to one. His death also reduced Webster County’s Civil war veterans to four. They are George E. Barber, 85 of Otho;
James Courtwright 85 of Duncombe; Bernard Suer 88 and Joseph Brundage 87, both from Lehigh.

Mr. Arnett is survived by three sons and one daughter. They are Charles Arnett, A.A. Arnett and Mrs. Charles Tullar of this city and F.O. Arnett of Nevada, Iowa. Two step, Merl Kinney and Ray Knapp of Kansas City also survive.

Funeral Wednesday
Funeral services will take place Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Wilder Funeral home. The Rev. A. W. Lyons of the First Baptist church will officiate and burial will be in Oakland cemetery. A military service will be held at the grave.
