COURT HOUSE TORN DOWN
Many Curios Found in Cornerstone of
Fort Dodge Old CourthouseSpecial to the Times Republic
Fort Dodge, July 18 – Great curiosity was excited in this city in the tearing down of the old courthouse, which is one of the early landmarks of this section of Iowa, over the prospective find of the cornerstone. The stone being broken open revealed a small glass bottle, containing silver and copper coins of an issue prior to 1850, several of which are now immensely valuable because of their rarity. A copy of the Fort Dodge Sentimental, the first paper published in Fort Dodge, and a manuscript history of the county up to May 6, 1859, written by Maj. William Williams, the first white settlor in Webster County, were found. Altho in an excellent state of preservation the writing has been obliterated by time. If it can be restored it will be of immense historical interest to the people of Iowa.
