I spent some time in Ancestry.com tonight and could not find them in Iowa.
There is a Mahue Olmstead who was in the 18th Regiment, Missouri Infantry as a private in the Civil War.
In the 1880 United States Federal Census, there is a Mahue Olmstead, 43, Mary C Olmstead, 42, Wm. B Olmstead, 19, Enos Olmstead, 16, Clara Olmstead 14, David N Olmstead 12, Francis E Olmstead 6, John W Olmstead, 1 that are all living in Jackson, Sullivan County, Missouri
In the 1910 United States Federal Census, there is a Mahue Olmstead, 72, living with the David N Olmstead family in Jackson, Sullivan County, Missouri
The Cemetery Inscriptions of Sullivan County Missouri lists:
Mayhew Olmstead
death date: 1912
age: 74 yrsMary C. Olmstead
death date: 1894
age: 56 yrsI don't know if these are the folks you are looking for. Unfortunately the 1890 census was for the most part destroyed by fire. I did soundex searches for the majority of all of the Iowa Census information and could not find this family in Iowa.
