Dan, I think I may have something for you. Your line is from the Logan Co, OH area back in 1850 where my line also resided. In 1860 Mercer Co, MO I found your J. H. and Isabella with children Daniel, G. W., Elizabeth, B. L. and J. M. They are living 2 doors down from Benjamin and Sophia Ellis. Perhaps they were brothers or cousins, I am not sure. On the 1850 Census for Logan Co, OH is my Robert J, son of James and Elizabeth Ellis. In 1860, they were residing in Grundy Co, MO. In 1870, they are in Benton Twp, Wayne Co, IA with what appears to be an adopted daughter named Margaret Bott, age 9. In my ROBB-ROSS line is a William Ellis who married Nancy Alice Young in Grundy Co, MO. This William and Nancy are living next door to Benjamin on the 1870 Grundy Co, MO Census. Connection? Not sure at this point. I throw that in because it is possible that all these Ellis' are related. Anyway, here is what I have with the ELLIS/TUBBS/MASON connection in Wayne Co, IA. On your John, I did find a John Ellis, son of John and Susan in Logan Co, OH in 1850. Not sure if he is yours or not, but there were alot of Ellis' there.
