James W. Porter was born April 18, 1834, in Vinton county, Ohio, and died May 23, 1921, in Humeston, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 15 days.

Mr. Porter was married to Nancy Jane Albin of Vinton county, Ohio in December 1858. To this union were born six children, three of whom survive him, being Ira J., Harvey and Mrs. Clara McKinley, all of Humeston and vicinity. Three children died in infancy.

In the fall of 1865 Mr. Porter journeyed to Iowa from Ohio, with his family, by wagon, and setttled on the farm on which his son Harvey now resides. He united with the Christian church in 1868 under the preaching of Pastor W. W. Burks.

Twenty-nine years ago he quit the farm and moved to Humeston into the same property in which he died, and in which his wife also died eight years ago.

For several months Mr. Porter has been a paralytic sufferer, and suffered intensely in the last three months of his life, but thru it all he was patient and uncomplaining.

The funeral services were held at the home conducted by the writer. The text was Job 14:14 "If a man die shall he live again" after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Humeston cemetery. J. D. Pointius
