Biography
Jean Elizabeth Truitt, A.N.C.
1884-1922Jean Elizabeth Truitt was born 12 June 1884 in Humeston, Wayne County, IA. She died of Tuberculosis on 3 January 1922 in Oneida, Knox, Illinois at the home of her sister, Mrs. Augusta Rozetta Truitt Fooks. A niece’s memory: “Aunt Jean contracted the fatal disease while caring for soldiers at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.” Burial was 12 January 1922 in the Oneida Cemetery, Knox County, IL.
Her Father John Taylor Truitt and Mother Nancy Catherine Fisher (daughter of John J. Fisher and Sarah E. Harrison), preceded Jean in death. As orphaned girls circa 1900, their Uncles James Truitt and Isaac Truitt of Yates City, IL, took in Jean and sister Rozetta. Sister Harriet lived nearby with Uncles Thomas and William Truitt, also of Yates City.
A brother, John Elijah Truitt, preceded Jean in death, probably in Wayne County, Iowa. Several nieces and nephews and two sisters, Rozetta Fooks (Thomas W.M.) of Oneida and Harriet Dell Woolsey (Silas E.) of Knoxville, and brother Albert Estelle Truitt of Seattle survived her.
Jean lived in Yates City, Illinois and attained her early education there. She then attended St. Mary’s Girls School in Knoxville. After moving to Galesburg, she was employed as a trained nurse. She probably received her nursing education at either Cottage Hospital or St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg, IL. In 1918, through the Red Cross, Jean enlisted as a member of the U.S. Army Nurses Corps, during World War I. She received her appointment to the Army Nurses Corps on 16 September 1918 and was furloughed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois on 9 October 1919.
Biographer’s Note: As research progresses on the Truitt family, the writer will add information to this biography. At this time, it is unknown when John Taylor Truitt and his family relocated from near Humeston, Iowa to Yates City, IL. John was the son of Elijah and Eliza Truitt of Yates City, and he was one of eleven children. I believe her early schooling was in Yates City Public School, prior to attending St. Mary’s School in Knoxville, Illinois.
