County youth dies in Vietnam

Pfc Dennis Dautremont, 21, of Riverside was killed in action in Vietnam on January 5. Word of his death was received by his father, Clem Dautremont of Riverside late Friday night and the aid of the Washington County Red Cross was enlisted to notify brother who is now serving with the army in Fort Sheridan, Ill.

Pfc Dautremont was the victim of a mortar attack at Ross L Z in Vietnam where he was serving with the First Air Cavalry, just one month after going to Vietnam.

He had started military duty with the army June 28, 1967, and received training at Fort Campbell, Ky., and Camp Polk, La., before going to Vietnam Dec6, 1967.

The young man was born Sept. 14 1946 at Riverside, a son of Clem and Lorena Kron Dautremont. He graduated from Highland High School in 1964 and attended the University of Iowa for two years.

Surviving are his father and two brothers: SP-4 Larry Dautremont at Fort Sheridan, Ill., and Ron at home.

His mother preceded him in death.

Funeral arrangements are indefinite, but the body will be returned to Riverside for burial.

Pfc Dautremont is the third young man from Washington County to be killed in the Vietnam war. Pfc Willard Friese was killed March 21, 1966 and SP-4 Robert Karr of Wellman was killed March 5, 1967.

Dautremont rites set for Tuesday

RIVERSIDE – Funeral services for Pfc. Dennis Dautremont of Riverside will be held Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Riverside with the Rev. W. F. Boeckmann in charge.

Rosary services will be held at 4, 7 and 8 p.m. this afternoon and evening in the Sorden & Adams funeral chapel at Riverside. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with the Veterans of Foreign Wars post at Riverside conducting military rites at the graveside.

Pfc. Dautremont was killed in action in Vietnam on January 5, 1968. The body was accompanied home by Pfc. William Schmidt, another Riverside soldier, who was a classmate of the deceased at Highland High School and entered military service and went to Vietnam at the same time.

Pfc. Dautremont was the son of Clem and Lorena Kron Dautremon. Surviving are his father and two brothers: SP-4 Larry Dautremont of Fort Sheridan, Ill., and Ron at home.

A memorial fund has been started by members of the youth’s graduating class as Highland High School.
