KALONA - A freelance photographer of wildlife and landscapes, J. Fred Dodson, 84, died Saturday at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, where he had been a patient for the past two weeks.
Mr. Dodson had had his photographs published in the Des Moines Register and Arizona Highway Magazine. He also lectured and showed slides at meetings of various area organizations.
His funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Peterseim Chapel, Kalona, the Rev. John D. Woodin officiating. Burial will be at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Military rites will be conducted at the grave by the John L. Mumm American Legion Post of Lone Tree, of which Mr. Dodson was a charter member.
A memorial fund in his name has been established for the Washington Township School near Kalona.
Born in Burden, Kans. Jan. 21, 1890, he was the son of Harry E. and Addie Morrison Dodson. He married Goldie Walker May 19, 1921 and she died in 1970.
He served with the infantry during World War I in the Mexican Border campaign and in France. He worked for Handler Motors in Cedar Rapids and in the western states prior to moving to Kalona.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. William (Eva) Bell of Washington, and a brother, Esley of Lone Tree.
A sister, as well as his wife, died earlier.
