Col. George W. Beck, lifetime resident of Kalona, died Tuesday, April 30, 1968 at the University Hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient since March 17. He had suffered burns on his chest when his shirt caught fire when he attempted to light a cigar.
George was tagged Colonel many years ago shortly after he completed auctioneers school. He also followed the barber trade for a number of years but was best known as a painter. He retired several years ago, and at the time of his death was a resident of Pleasantview.
George was born January 25, 1878 the son of D.H. and Mary Beck. He attended Kalona schools and was a member of the 1904 independent football team. He was a member of the United Christian and Baptist church, a past Nobel Grand of the Kalona I.O.O.F. lodge of which he was also a 63-year member. Also a member of the Rebekah lodge in Kalona. At the time of his death he was 90 years, 3 months and 5 days of age.
Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. Myrna Taylor, Whittier, Calif., Ardith VonDraska, Los Angeles, Calif.; and one nephew, Daryl R. VonDraska, Los Angeles. Also several grand nieces and nephews.
