Mrs. Mary Ellen Chody
KALONA - Mrs. Mary Ellen Bermel Chody, 36, of Kalona, former rural Muscatine resident, died at her home in Kalona Friday afternoon of a heart attack.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, at the Holy Trinity Cathedral church at Richmond, three miles south of Kalona. Burial will be in Sharon Hill Cemetery.
Prayer services will be held at 3 and 7 p.m. Sunday at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.
Mary Ellen Bermel was born July 2, 1932 at Muscatine, a daughter of Clarence and Isabelle McElroy Bermel. She graduated form St. Mary's High School in Muscatine in the class of 1950 and was a 1953 graduate of Mercy school of Nursing.
She married Joseph Chody, Sept. 3, 1955 at Muscatine. She was a member of the Holy Trinity church; a representative of the Washington County Red Cross Board; a member of the Idris Club of Kalona; was very active in civic and local affairs. Mrs. Chody had been employed as a nurse 15 years at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, and the Pleasant Home in Kalona.
Survivors are her husband, Joseph Chody; one son, Joseph Randall, 11-years and one daughter, Rosemary Clare, 7-years, both at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bermel of rural Muscatine; one brother, William Bermel of Wapello; and one sister, Karen Bermel of Cedar Rapids.
