LONE TREE - Gertrude R. Shebek, 71, of Iowa City, and formerly of Riverside died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness.

A mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside, with the Rev. Rich Adam officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent's Cemetery in rural Riverside. Visitation will Thursday, Sept. 16 from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home in Riverside. A general memorial fund has been established.

Miss Shebek was born Oct. 7, 1932, in Riverside, the daughter of Walter and Celeste (Mellecker) Shebek.

Miss Shebek was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside and the Red Hat Club at the Greenwood Manor. She resided at Orchard Hill in Washington, before moving to the Greenwood Manor in Iowa City in 1997. She attended the Shelter Workshop in Washington. She liked listening to music, knitting, doing ceramics and spending time with her family and friends, especially the nieces and nephews.

Miss Shebek is survived by two brothers, Edward Shebek and wife Joan of Riverside, and Paul Shebek and wife Pat of Iowa City; three sisters, Mary Huffman of Riverside, Pat Hamer of West Branch, Frances Weber and husband Lloyd of Riverside, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers-in-law, Leo Huffman and Robert Hamer.
