Monday, March 18, 1974Mrs. Payton Dies At 78
Mrs. Mabel M. Payton, 78, died Sunday about 8:10 p.m. north of Batavia. She had been in failing health for four months.
A resident of Fairfield since 1966, Mrs. Payton resided at 1103 S. Sixth St. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral Home with Bishop Russell Rauscher, Mount Pleasant, officiating.
Burial will be in Clay Cemetery near Rubio.
Mrs. Payton was born May 15, 1895 at Tilton, Iowa, the daughter of James W. and Essie Ann Ferguson Mayne. She was married Feb. 14, 1917 to John M. Payton. He died June 6, 1961.
Mrs. Payton lived for many years in Oskaloosa and later in Rubio before moving to Fairfield. She was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Surviving are one son, James M. Payton, Cedar Rapids; and two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Sparks, Brighton; and Mrs. Cecil Zehr, Fairfield. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Two daughters are deceased.
