Washington (IA) Evening Journal
3 July 1963

Rev. and Mrs. E. E. Voss were killed instantly at 8:15 a.m. today in a car-truck collision north of Brighton on highway number one.

The Voss car collided head-on with a skidding “pup” trailer which had swung across the highway on a curve at the foot of the hill leading into Brighton. The car was totally demolished, the entire front end being crushed by the force of the impact.

Rev. Voss was a retired Methodist minister. He was 79 years old and his wife Bertha Voss, was 78.

Driver and owner of the grain truck and trailer is Earl William Lanz of Hedrick. He was not injured.

Sheriff Charles Snyder and Highway Patrolman Lyle Hansen who investigated the crash said the Voss car was headed north at the time of the crash and the truck was traveling south, going around a curve on the wet pavement.

The trailer being pulled behind the straight grain truck skidded across the highway into the path of the Voss car which was traveling north.

The car came to rest near the center of the highway, with the trailer partly tipped over on top of it, and crews worked about an hour to get the highway cleared and traffic flowing after the accident.

The sheriff and patrolman said charges of failure to have his vehicle under control will be filed against the truck driver, Lanz.

Rev. and Mrs. Voss were long time residents of the Brighton community. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. L. W. Griffith of California.

Arrangements for the funeral were indefinite today.

The Rev. and Mrs. Voss came to Iowa in 1931. He had served churches at both Crawfordsville and Brighton in Washington County. Also at Kellerton and Rockwell. He had served at Brighton from 1942 until his retirement in 1950.
