Adams County Free Press, Corning Iowa,
December 31, 1898
Samuel G. Johnston, an old resident of Corning, died at the home of his son, Willis B. Johnston, about six o'clock Christmas morning. He has long been a sufferer, and he expired suddenly from closing of the bronchial tubes. He was up between five and six o'clock to light the fire, but when Mrs Willis Johnson went to call him to breakfast, he had passed away. Deceased was born In Holmes county
Ohio. He was 73 years, 9 mouths and 1 day old. For about twenty-five years he acted as traveling salesman for a New York dry goods house. He came to Adams county in 1878. He was a good citizen, a sturdy, rugged character. He leaves six sons and two daughters, two sons being in Montana and one in Colorado. The funeral services were preached Sunday, Revs. T...D. Ewing and J. A. Lovejoy officiating.
