Paul V. SHEARER, 76 of Washington, died Wednesday, April 5, 1995 at his home.

Born January 21, 1919 at Columbus Junction, he was the son of Brainard Hayes and Maude Sara HANFT. He married Barbara Jean Smith June 11, 1943 in Ames.

He had served on the Boy Scouts District Board, the Soldiers Relief Commission, the Board of Directors of the Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association, and as president of the YMCA, and the Washington County Bar Association. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 107, American Legion, the Washington Rotary Club, the Iowa and American Bar Associations and the United Methodist Church, where he was an adult Sunday School teacher for nearly 50 years.

In 1986, Mr. Shearer received the Rotary Community Service Award and in 1993, he received the Washington Community Chest Gold Feather Award.

He was included in A.N. Marquis Publication of Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Methodism.

He was a law clerk to Chief Justice Edward C. Eicher, U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. from 1941-1943. During World War II, he was a special agent, SIC-CIC (U.S. Army). He was admitted to the Bar in 1942. At the time of his death, he was a partner of Shearer and Tindal Law Firm.

Since 1979, he had been president, publisher and columnist of the Columbus Gazette in Columbus Junction.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark S. SHEARER of Columbus Junction; one daughter, Jane M. MOON of Colorado Springs, CO: two brothers Woodrow J. SHEARER and William D. SHEARER, both of Columbus Junction; one sister Marine K. ROBERTSON of Wilton; and six grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

Friends called Saturday at the Jones Funeral Home in Washington with the REvs Clarence and Zona LAUTT officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington.

A memborial has been established for the United Methodist Church.
