Dear Rachel,
Sorry that I don't have any better news for you. I read through the 1870 Warren county census for the townships of Richland, Washington (including the town of Indianola), and Palmyra , but could not find your William H. Gardner. There was a Wm. Gardner family in Palmyra township, but it didn't match (family listed below).

Wm. Gardner age 33 born New York
Mary Gardner age 30 born Pennsylvania
Alice Gardner age 12 born Illinois
Alfred Gardner age 8 born Iowa
Sallie Gardner age 6 born Iowa
Austin Gardner age 3 born Iowa
Jane Walch age 66 born Pennsylvania
