Mardell Hancock, 83, of Waverly, formerly of Indianola, died Saturday, Oct. 8, at her home in Waverly.
Born Ailsa Mardell Acker, she grew up near the farming communities Anita and Wiota, and attended Simpson College. She married Reverend Lester Hancock in 1950, and flourished as a church, school, and community volunteer and organizational leader in the church communities and schools of Oakville-Kingston, Lanesboro, Woodward, Pleasantville and Hartley. She was active in statewide United Methodist Women, serving several offices on the local level as well as District Literature Secretary.
She moved to Indianola in 1977, and joined Business and Professional Women and the First United Methodist Church. As an employee of Camp Wesley Woods, she continued her selfless dedication to youth, outdoors, and religious training.
She is survived by three sons, John (Jane Sloan) Hancock of Spokane, Wash., Craig (Elizabeth) Hancock of Waverly, and Benjamin (Cindi) Hancock of Chariton; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great–grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, at Heritage United Methodist Church in Waverly. A graveside service will be held on Monday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. in the Memorial Garden Cemetery, Atlantic. A gathering with refreshments will follow, at the Farmers' Kitchen, on Walnut Street in Atlantic.
