Dr. Florence Armstrong, 77, who died Thursday at Alexandria, Va., will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Interment will be in Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery. A retired Social Security Administration economist, she died of cancer at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D. C. She had lived in the Washington and Alexandria area since World War I. Dr. Armstrong was a graduate of Simpson College, received her master’s degree from Radcliffe and returned to the State University of Iowa for her doctorate after teaching at Simpson, Radcliffe, Hunter, Florida State College for Women and the University of California. Her professional work included research at Brookings Institute, 1922 to 1924, and government service. She was with the war department 1918 to 1922, and was an economist in the Social Security Administration, 1934 to 1950. Dr. Armstrong also gave much time to promoting the equal rights amendment, serving as finance chairman, vice-chairman and acting chairman of the National Woman’s Party, Washington, D. C., and also as editor of Equal Rights. An active club woman, she was a member of the Alexandria Woman’s Club, the Alexandria Association for Preservation of Historical Sites, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Soroptimist, the Radcliffe Alumni, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and was past president of the D. C. Club of the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. She also was a member of the Alexandria First Baptist Church.
Dr. Armstrong is survived by a niece, Mrs. Margaret Grimm of Los Angeles, Calif., and a nephew, William McClurg of Grand Junction, Colo., who will be here for the funeral services.
