Betsy Lorena Gritts
(February 1, 1973 - July 10, 2022)A Celebration of Life Gathering for Betsy Gritts, 49, of Indianola, who passed away Sunday, July 10, 2022, at her home, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, at the Indianola American Legion Post #165, with a service at 2 p.m.
Betsy was born February 1, 1973 in Knoxville, IA to Eugene W. Gritts and Pamela J. (Binns) Gritts. Betsy, her parents and her siblings: Jeannette, Tammy, Eugene, and Anessa lived in the country until she was 10. They then moved to Pleasantville, where Betsy would attend school from Kindergarten through graduation. She grew up loving a variety of animals, running track, and also spending time with her family including her great grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She enjoyed when her grandpa would rent out the Knoxville pool for the family. Holidays were always a favorite for Betsy, as the entire family would gather, a tradition that has continued into recent years. As an adult, Betsy had 5 children and they were her world. Together they went camping, rode bikes, fished, watched movies, and so much more. While she had 5 biological children, she had dozens of others that called her “Mom” as well. Everyone was always welcome and she loved having a full house. She also spent as much time as possible with her beloved siblings, including many trips to Oklahoma to visit her half siblings. Oklahoma was a beautiful place and she shared her memories from these trips many times. She always wanted to go back again. She learned to make bearded earrings from a cousin. Betsy truly loved being around her family, and she spoiled her (8) grandchildren absolutely rotten. In 2019, Betsy was diagnosed with cancer. She fought the cancer and at one point was declared cancer free. Unfortunately, the cancer metastasized and spread to her liver, and she began treatments again. Betsy was a pillar of strength, grace, and courage as she underwent these painful treatments. She passed away peacefully in her home on July 10th, 2022. Betsy is survived by four of her children: Jessica (Ben) Martin, Phoenix (Cheyanne) Russell, Samantha (Brandon) Cook, and Austin Russell and her eight grandchildren: Kaden Eugene, Irene Abigail, Margaret Mae, Lorena Allison, Lincoln Mitchell, Luna Ray, Charlotte Kae, Bain Eugene Anthony. She will also be forever remembered by her siblings, and a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Anthony. Her absence will be felt forever. She loves her family very much.
