Karen Ann Schrader
(June 1, 1951 - August 5, 2022)

Karen Ann Schrader, 71, passed away Friday, August 5, 2022 at home. She died doing the thing she lived to do, working in her yard. Karen was born on June 1, 1951 in Jefferson, Iowa to Alfred and Margaret Robinson. She graduated from East Green High School in Grand Junction, Iowa in 1969. She attended the University of Iowa for one year and then transferred to Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, where she earned her Associate Degree in Nursing in 1974. Karen worked for 36 years at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, with 30 some years in the Endoscopy unit. She was married to Dale F. Schrader on May 13, 1973, in Grand Junction, Iowa. To this union they were blessed with two children, Crystal Anne Schrader and Douglas Michael Schrader, both of Des Moines, Iowa. She was exceptionally proud and protective of her children. Karen was an active member of 4-H, Rainbow Girls, band, and choir in here younger years. She enjoyed traveling with her parents and brother as a child. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary. She liked to collect Precious Moments, thimbles, cookbooks, and antique kitchen utensils. She loved going to Reiman Gardens in Ames and the Des Moines Botantical Center to look at the flowers and sculpture and never turned down an opportunity to visit the Amana Colonies. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 49 years, Dale Schrader; her children Crystal Schrader and Doug Schrader, both of Des Moines; her brother Jim Last of Grand Junction, Iowa; her sister-in-law Fern Wright; her nieces Lori Boucher, Liz (Ed) Copenhagen, Laura (Justin) Andersen (and their children Kiersten and Maverick); her nephews DJ (Judy) Boucher and JC Last; and other beloved family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Margaret (Robinson) Last; her parents-in-law, Ike and Helen Schrader; and her brother-in-law, Paul Haskins. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2022 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Reiman Gardens in Ames. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Karen’s name to Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary or Planned Parenthood.
