Susan Ann Rowland
(April 1, 1935 - March 24, 2023)

Susan Ann Rowland, 87, of Indianola, passed away Friday, March 24, 2023 at Westview Care Center. Private family inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Sue was born April 1st, 1935 in Osceola, Iowa. She attended school in Osceola and graduated in 1953. She married Ronald Lee Rowland on August 6th, 1960. From their union, came their two children: Jon and Ann. Sue dedicated her work outside of their home to the telephone company for 40 years.
Sue was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball fan. As a season ticket holder for many years, she loved to attend games with her friends. She even had the opportunity to cheer on the Hawks at a Rose Bowl in California with Jon. Sue truly enjoyed all the beautiful things in life, especially flowers and birds. She loved putting out special birdseed to attract Goldfinches or “Hawkeye birds” to watch through her window. Growing the biggest and juiciest tomatoes was also a specialty of hers. Attending church dinners and fish fries with friends was one of her favorite outings. One thing her friends and loved ones could always look forward to was a sweet note in her beautiful, flawless penmanship. Anyone who had the honor of knowing and loving Sue, would sing her praises describing her gentle soul and giving nature. Always happy to see everyone, she was sweet to her core and lived her life for her family. Sue enjoyed any chance to visit her son, Jon and family in California, sharing time together over a good meal and enjoying the warm weather near the ocean. Spending time with her daughter, Ann and family here at home, also brought her great happiness. Sue, Ann and the girls spent time on the weekends shopping and going out to eat. She loved going to her grandchildren’s activities to cheer them on when she could. When visited by her great-grandchildren, Sue’s eyes would light up and often shed a little tear of happiness. The feeling of overwhelming happiness during their visits was mutual. Sue’s sweet, kind soul will be greatly missed forever by her family.
Susan is survived by her children, Jon (Amy) Rowland and Ann Day; grandchildren, Alyson (Rusty) Stark, Benjamin Rowland, Anna Rowland and Kathryn Day; great-grandchildren, Lola, Sullivan, Hugo and Sylvie Stark; sister, Sally Derby; sister-in-law, Shirley Miller; nieces and nephews, Michael Spellerberg, Jody Cox and Mel Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Rowland; parents, Russell and Martha McQuern; son, Steven Scott Rowland; son-in-law David Day; father and mother-in-law, Gerald and Jessie Rowland; brothers-in-law, Jerry Derby and Lyle Miller.
Sue’s family would like to thank Westview Care Center and Suncrest hospice for the loving care they provided to her over the past few years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given directly to iowabirdrehab.org in Sue’s name.
