Keith William Butler
(September 10, 1987 - April 22, 2023)We honor and celebrate the life of Keith William Butler, born September 10, 1987, in Des Moines, IA. He passed away unexpectedly on April 22, 2023, at the age of 35, due to chronic health conditions. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with a prayer service and time to remember at 7 p.m.
Keith grew up in Indianola, IA with his parents, Brad and Edie, brothers Joe and Pete. He graduated from Indianola High School where he was an accomplished student and athlete in track, baseball and football. He had a great love of sport and was a fast, strong and a fierce competitor. He was a lifelong Iowa State Cyclone, Green Bay Packer and Cleveland Guardians fan.
He went on to graduate from Iowa State University with a degree in finance. His professional career was in banking and financial technology sales. He was formerly married to Christa Ballantyne and together they had 2 beautiful children; Lauren and Graham, who were Keith’s greatest pride and joy. Being their father was the most important accomplishment of his life. He thrived on sharing his love and skill of sport with Graham and demonstrating his best dance moves with Lauren, learning and practicing her dance routines. They spent hours playing board games, talking about their school day, as well as, their hopes and dreams. Above all, he nurtured love, kindness, acceptance and academic excellence. Like so many, Keith had struggles with mental health and alcohol use disorder. It is with sincere gratitude that we want to acknowledge the support and guidance received during his work toward sobriety and recovery, from Powell CDC, AA sponsors and groups. It is our hope that anyone experiencing mental health and addiction challenges will take the first step forward to seek professional help.
Keith is predeceased by his grandparents; WD (Bud) and Phyllis Butler and Max and Marilyn Sowers and uncle Dan Butler. He is survived by his children Lauren and Graham Butler, father Brad (Alesia) Butler, mother Edie (Kent) Freise, brothers Joe (Leah) Butler and Pete (Ashley) Butler, as well as his adored niece and nephews Grady, Bennett, Nora and Max. Additionally there are many special extended family and friends who loved him and will remember him with love and laughter. Keith was a passionate supporter of education and had great hopes for all that Lauren and Graham will achieve through higher education. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family and will be set in trust for his children’s college education.
