Arthur was born in Vinton, Iowa, on November 11, 1922, and grew up in Brooklyn where he met his future wife, Phyllis Ann (Fowler) Montgomery. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids for a short time but left to serve his country in the Army Air Corps during WWII. While still serving in the military, he and Phyllis were married. Arthur left the military when his father died, and he and Phyllis returned to Brooklyn to take over his father’s automobile dealership. Arthur was in the car business for over 40 years at several dealerships throughout the western US. He eventually sold his business in Estherville, Iowa, and retired in 1987. Arthur and Phyllis had three children and enjoyed a wonderful life together for 46 years before her death in 1989.
Arthur was fortunate to enjoy another very happy marriage lasting 24 years to Mary (Geisse) Montgomery. He gained three stepchildren from that union, and the two families had many enjoyable times together celebrating holidays, 90th birthdays, and many other important milestones. Arthur always said, “Anything good that ever happened to me, happened in Iowa.”
He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Jeffrey (Kathy) Montgomery, Portland, OR, Gregory (Angela) Montgomery, Gainesville, GA, Amy (Scott) Montgomery; stepchildren Bill (Pat) Geisse, West Linn, OR, Martha (Marv) Rooney, Stillwater, MN, Don Geisse; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
