Allen was born on September 27, 1953 in Des Moines, Iowa and was the first-born son of Edwin and Ruth (Richards) Henry. He grew up raising livestock on his parent’s farm in Indianola, Iowa. When he could barely see over the steering wheel, he was in the fields driving tractors along with of his father Edwin and grandfather Roy R. Henry, learning how to turn the dirt with them. He started at a very young age showing cows at the Warren County Fair and Iowa State Fair. At the early age of 9, he joined Be-Square 4-H Club, where later on he was elected to the 4-H County Council, “Which was a goal I have been working for since the early years of my 4-H Club work.” He married Cindy Hamilton on June 26, 1976 and met the “other” love of his life in July 1976, his 1972 Red Chevy Pulling Truck, The Red Devil aka Henry’s Red Devil. They enjoyed traveling with a group of other local pullers around many states. In 1978, they started their family and were blessed with 3 children: Amanda, Blake and Hannah.
Allen continued his love for Angus cattle and farming throughout his entire life, sharing his experiences and knowledge with his family, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was always willing to teach and help others. Allen was proud of his roots and instilled them in his children. Each one of his children spent their early years riding in the cabs of his tractors and combines alongside of him. As they grew, he taught them, along with his nieces and nephews, how to care for their livestock and show at the fair. As his children grew out of 4-H, he began training the next generation, his grandkids. Allen enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren. Growing up farming, Allen continued his family tradition in the next generation of Henry farms, where he worked side by side with his brother Keith and their father Edwin. Allen and Keith started A&K Henry Sales and expanded it into other agriculture services, including seed, feed, starter fertilizer and seed treating services to surrounding farmers. Throughout their sales they have both formed new friendships and relationships with fellow farmers in the community. They provided additional learning opportunities for farmers by implementing one of the largest row crop test plots in the state. Allen and Cindy enjoyed taking trips out of the country going to many destinations in the Caribbean with his seed corn companies. Allen truly lived his life to the fullest. And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, “I need a caretaker…” So God Made A Farmer (Allen E. Henry)
Allen is survived by his wife, Cindy; children, Amanda (Tim) Nelson, Blake (Rachelle) Henry, Hannah (Joe) Byers; grandchildren, Halle and Hoyt Byers, Oliver Henry, Tucker and Teddy Nelson, Dylan, Aubrey and Hudson McKasson; parents, Edwin and Ruth Henry; siblings, Carol (Mark) McBride, Marilyn (Mark) Goodhue, Keith (Marie) Henry; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Roy and Ruth Henry, Wesley and Irene Richards.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Farmer’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where family will be present from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family in his name for a contribution at a later date.
