Gerald Gene Johnson
(July 8, 1930 - December 27, 2020)

Gerald “Gene” Johnson, 90, of Indianola, IA, passed away Sunday evening, December 27, 2020, at home with his wife and daughter by his side. Private family services will be held Saturday January 9, 2020. Friends may join on the Livestream on Gene’s obituary page of Overton Funeral Home’s website, beginning at 2 p.m. Inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Gene, son of Gerald and Velma Johnson was born July 8, 1930 in Hopeville, IA. He attended several different rural schools before graduating from high school in Murray. He grew up helping with the family’s general store and later owning a local pool hall in Hopeville. At 21 years of age, he proudly served in the United States Navy from 1951-1955 aboard Navy destroyer USS Blue 744 as a machinist mate 3rd class during the Korean War.
He was united in marriage to Veda Hutcheson February 7, 1957 and together they had one daughter, Brenda, in August of 1968. Gene drove for Indianola Hog Market for 37 years. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his kind and compassionate spirit.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #165 and enjoyed playing any kind of cards with friends, camping, and taking summer trips to the Lake of the Ozarks, where he continued water skiing past the age of 70. He also enjoyed woodworking, making many baskets, chests and other decorations with exceptional craftsmanship. His summers revolved around both the Warren County and Iowa State Fairs. He worked for years at the Warren County Fairgrounds doing maintenance, and he and Veda enjoyed their years of camping at the Iowa State Fair.
Above all, his utmost love was his family. He dedicated his life to the happiness of those he loved. He enjoyed going for road trips with Veda and spending time doing many projects with his son-in-law Craig and his grandson Tyler. He was always in attendance of the many activities, sports, and dance recitals of his grandkids.
Gene is survived by his wife, Veda Johnson; daughter, Brenda (Craig) Adamson; grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) Ward, Tyler (Shyanne) Adamson, and Emily Adamson; great-grandchildren, Faith, Grace and Trinity Ward, Wade Adamson, and Greyson Henderson; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Velma Johnson; sister, Darlene Wright; brothers, Duane Johnson and Donald Johnson; and an infant sister, Phyllis.
