Eugene Wayne Lucas
(May 19, 1929 - January 10, 2021)

Eugene Wayne Lucas, better known as Wayne Lucas, was born May 19, 1929, on the family farm in rural Prole, Iowa. He was the eldest of three children that were born to Russell and Lois (Hagen) Lucas. He graduated in 1946 from Norwalk High School where he played basketball and excelled as a pitcher in baseball. On November 8, 1949, he married Mary A. Haines in Norwalk, Iowa. He and Mary farmed near Indianola, Iowa. Wayne worked briefly for the Railroad which fueled his interest in trains and he also loved to fish. In 1955 he bought a truck and started hauling milk for area farmers. In 1977 he was married to Roberta Wallick. He continued to haul milk until he retired in 2010 at the age of 80. Wayne liked to buy and sell real estate and spent most of his life living in the country, He last lived at Prairie Vista Village in Altoona.
Wayne passed away at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines on January 10, 2021. He has four children, Linda and John Dawson of Aurora, Missouri (Jerry Dawson, Jim Dawson and Jon and Alana Dawson), Diane and Gary Sneller of Cedar Rapids, Iowa (Suzanne and Clint Koch, Sarah and Mark George), Eugene and Bonnie Lucas (Joel and Shelli Lucas), and Kathleen and Kevin Nikkel (Lucas and Leah Nikkel and Kayla and Daniel Nemmers. Wayne has 18 great- grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. Of his original family, Wayne leaves two sisters, Marilyn Walker of Ackworth, Iowa, and Karen Williams and her husband Rod of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents Russell and Lois Lucas, wife Roberta Lucas, his brother-in-law Lowell Walker, a grandson Jesse Dawson and a great-grandson Cody Dawson.
A Public Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Masks are required. Memorials may be given in his name to Indianola Freedom Fellowship Church.
