(October 19, 1935 - January 16, 2021)

Funeral services for Edith Eileen Heemstra, 85, who passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021, in Indianola, IA will be held 10 a.m., January 22, 2021 at the First Assembly of God Church in Indianola. For those unable to attend, join the Livestream on Edith’s obituary page of Overton Funeral Home’s website. Burial will follow in the Liberty Center Cemetery, Liberty Center, IA.
Edith was born October 19, 1935 in the farm home near Russell, Iowa to Howard Ellsworth and Edna Mae (Feight) Baughman, the ninth of eleven children. She attended rural schools in Warren County and graduated from Indianola High School in 1954. On June 6, 1954 she was united in marriage to Merrill B. Heemstra at the Methodist Church in Milo, IA. Edith started her career in banking in 1954 with Peoples Trust & Savings Bank helping many customers in the bookkeeping department, accounting services, as Lacona Branch Manager from 1976 to 1986, retiring in 1997 as a loan processor. She was a member of the Liberty Center United Methodist Church serving as treasurer for many years. Edith also served as a Cub Scout leader, 4-H leader, a charter member and treasurer of the Southeast Warren Scholarship committee, treasurer of the Warren County Fair Association and was a 50 year member of Eastern Star. She and Merrill enjoyed dancing, card club, Country Couples, the Warren County Fair, the Iowa State Fair, trips to Las Vegas, Arizona and their annual trips to Lake of the Ozarks. Edith also enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and her Red Hat Club. She will be remembered by her family for holiday traditions like Easter egg hunts, Christmas stockings for everyone and her famous peanut brittle. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and her kindness and patience will be remembered by all who knew her.
Edith is survived by her children, Merrill Dean (LuAnne) Heemstra of Indianola, Sheila (Randy) Miller of Lacona; grandchildren, Brandey (Mark) Smith of Indianola, Merrill Richard (Jana) Heemstra of Austin, Texas, Amanda (Dean) Binder of Indianola, Kaylee (Curtis Berry) Miller of Winterset, Kaleb (Taylor Clark) Miller of Lacona; great-grandchildren, Mason Smith, Karley Smith, Chandler Heemstra, Ashton Binder, and Myra Binder all of Indianola and Elin Heemstra of Texas; siblings, Ralph (Norma) Baughman of Iowa City and Marilyn Porter of Texas; sisters-in-law, Norma Baughman of Indianola and Kathy Baughman of Colorado; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Merrill B Heemstra; parents, Howard and Edna Baughman; brothers, Robert Baughman, Donald Baughman, Marvin Baughman and John Baughman; sisters, Veda Sams, Vera Cannon, Ruth Wilson and Mary Louise Sandy.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at First Assembly of God Church where family will be present to greet friends. Memorial contributions can be made to the Warren County Fair Association or the Liberty Center United Methodist Church in her name.
