Joanne Marie Amos was born the daughter of Fred and Marguerite (Grassman) Balzer in Des Moines, Iowa on June 25, 1937. Joanne attended Visitation Catholic School through 8th grade, spent 9th grade at St. Joseph’s Academy, before attending and graduating from Des Moines East High School in 1955. Following high school graduation, Joanne attended Grandview College.
On December 3, 1966, Joanne united in marriage to Larry Richard Amos at the First United Methodist Church in Indianola. Joanne recently told a story about how she was able to impress Larry with her first car and was convinced that this led to their courtship and eventual marriage. To this union three children, Rick, Diane and Marcy, were born and they settled in Indianola to raise their family.
Joanne began her professional career at Northwestern Bell in 1955 as a Telephone Operator making $38 per week. She would eventually retire from US West in 2002 with an accumulated 34 years of service, while taking leave during this time to start their family. One of the highlights of her career combined her spiritual beliefs and professional career when she worked on phone lines for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Des Moines in 1979.
Joanne was a lifelong Christian who attended Browns Chapel, Chapel of Faith and Freedom Fellowship Church, where she was an active member. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, joining in 1957. She was a long time member of the Warren County Genealogical Society. Her research, documentation and photographs of her family history dates back more than two centuries and has left the family with many cherished memories and treasures.
Joanne was always there for family and friends. She was as a dedicated mother and grandmother, as she would spend countless hours attending her grandkids' events, no matter how many miles she had to drive. In addition to family, her community was of upmost importance to her. She was always up to date on events and happenings within Warren County and beyond.
Survivors include her children, Rick (Jennifer) Amos and Marcy (Darcy) Hoch; grandchildren, Sarah Amos, Joshua and Jordan Diehl, Lance and Kole Hoch; siblings, William (Janis) Balzer and Ellen (Larry) Archibald; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Amos; daughter, Diane Amos; and parents, Fred and Marguerite (Grassman) Balzer.
The family would like to send a special thanks to the administration and staff at Westview Care Center in Indianola where Joanne spent the last 4 years of her life here on earth, as well as to Suncrest Hospice for moms special care in the last 2 months. The care and love extended to Joanne and our entire family has been unparalleled.
