Edna Mae Gripp
(August 23, 1931 - February 6, 2021)

Edna Mae Gripp, 89, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021 in Des Moines. Private family services will be held Friday, February 12, 2021. Friends may join the family on her obituary page of Overton Funeral Home’s website beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Rick and Kevin have fond memories of shopping with their mom and grandmother. They would take the bus from Indianola to Des Moines and would spend the day and ride back home with Merrill. Rick says if he couldn’t find them in the store, he would just stop and listen for the child screaming and would know that had to be Kevin.
Edna and Merrill enjoyed camping especially at the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion, Twin Anchors in Colo, and in Warsaw, Missouri to mention a few. They always loved it when the grandkids would show up to spend time.
Edna enjoyed spending time with her sister Jerry shopping, doing puzzles and going out to eat. They also spent many hours making porcelain dolls and sewing beautiful doll clothes. Edna babysat for 20+ years for numerous families. Most of which she raised from newborn to middle school age.
Edna was a great cook. The boys fondly remember her fried chicken, potato salad (with no onions) and decorated sugar cookies. She even did beautifully molded chocolates. In later years, Edna enjoyed going to the casinos to play the slots. She also made numerous trips with her cousin Merle Marie to Branson to enjoy the shows and shopping.
Edna is survived by her sons, Rick (Deb) Gripp and Kevin (Rhonda) Gripp; grandchildren, Lee (Jeff Gillum) Fry, Kelsey (Adam) Travis, Allison (Beau) Crookes, and Mark (Casey) Gripp; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Jerry Whitlatch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merrill Gripp; and parents Virgil and Neva Hawkins.
Memorials may be given in her name to Midwest Old Threshers in Mt. Pleasant, IA. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
