Celebration of Life Services for Melinda Jean “Toast” Van Genderen, 49, who passed away Friday, March 5, 2021, in Des Moines, will be held 7 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2021, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Melinda was born in Des Moines, IA July 31, 1971 to Larry and Beverly Van Genderen. She had a daughter, Bailey Van Genderen, the love of her life born in Des Moines, IA. She had two loving sisters, Mary Myers who lives in Alaska and Veronda Beavers who lives in Colorado.
Melinda lived in Indianola her whole life. She spent most of her life waitressing and cooking in various restaurants. Most people knew her as “Toast” and she had many friends that loved her so much.
Melinda always had a big smile to greet anyone she met. She was really good at telling a joke and making people laugh. Melinda enjoyed listening to music on her headphones. It was her favorite pastime. Melinda enjoyed all kinds of sports too. She played basketball in school. One of her favorite things to do was watch the Green Bay Packers and cheer them one. She also liked to watch Iowa Hawkeyes football. She really enjoyed working at the well while the Iowa Cubs were playing baseball.
Melinda loved spending time with her daughter, Bailey and her friends. She liked going to the lake to camp and swim, and loved watching the sunrise and sunset.
Melinda is survived by her daughter, Bailey Van Genderen; sisters, Veronda (James) Beavers and Mary (Mike) Meyers; Baileys father and lifelong friend Zachary Sorensen; niece, Marah Meyers and nephew, Michale Meyers; close friends, Erin Karas and Melissa Tendall. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Beverly Van Genderen.
