Doyle Duane Adams
(December 11, 1932 - December 8, 2020)

Doyle Duane Adams was born December 11, 1932, in Burlington, IA, to Howard and Marian Adams. He spent his childhood hunting and fishing with his father and his high school friends, as he got older. These became lifelong friendships with friends he continued to see at his class reunions clear up to his 65th in 2015. Doyle was a swimmer, a lifeguard, a tennis player, a fisherman and a hunter. He won awards in all of these including trap shooting, duck calling, fly casting and fly tying. And he had a story to go with every event! “Did I ever tell you about the time…”!
After high school, Doyle served in the Marines during the Korean war. He attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Fish and Wildlife Management. It was during his college years that he met his wife, Mary Ann, while teaching dance on the weekends at Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Burlington. They married in 1958 and had three little girls. There were to be no boys to take hunting and fishing but, those girls could fry a rabbit, paraffin a duck, and pluck a pheasant like pros!
Doyle was hired as a Wildlife Unit Manager by the Iowa Conservation Commission. He worked at the Sweet Marsh unit in Bremer County, the Colyn unit in Lucas County, and at the Wildlife Exhibit at Ledges State Park in Boone. In 1967 he moved his family to Indianola, Iowa, and took a job as Coordinator of Activities for Iowa’s County Conservation Boards. He later became Parks Bureau Chief with the Iowa DNR. Indianola remained his home for 53 years.
During his working years and after his retirement in 1992, Doyle and Mary Ann travelled the United States. In 1998, they spent six weeks in Australia, New Zealand, Bali, and Tahiti. After Mary Ann’s death from cancer in 1999, Doyle continued his traveling and hunted doves in Argentina, turkeys in Mexico, and photos-only on safari in Africa. He fished for salmon in Alaska, walleye in Canada and hunted elk in Colorado. But his favorite activity was hunting deer and turkeys on his farm and wetland properties in southern Iowa.
Doyle, and his stories, will be missed by most who knew him. Left to mourn his passing are his daughters, Rochelle (Randy) Zimmerman and Marzale (Dave) Fosdick, grandchildren Anthony (Rachel) Graham, Caitie (Alex) Smith, Ahlea Graham, Adam Fosdick and Brooke (Kolby) Moore, great grandchildren Lucy & Eloise Smith and Rheya & Roman Moore. In his final years, the grandchildren, “the little ones” were his greatest joy. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Larry (Judy) Waterhouse and 3 nephews. Doyle is predeceased by his parents, his sister Beverly Steenhoek, his wife Mary Ann, and daughter Kasaundra Adams.
A Celebration of Doyle's Life will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 15, 2021, at the Warren County Izaak Walton League Club House, 16383 118th Avenue, Indianola, IA 50125. Memorial contributions, in Doyle’s name, can be made to the Warren County Isaak Walton League or the Annett Nature Center, Indianola, IA.
