Lynnea Ann Young
(May 9, 1953 - August 12, 2021)

A Celebration of Life Service for Lynnea Ann Young, 68, of Lacona, IA, who passed away at home Thursday, August 12, 2021, will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 16, 2021 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Visitation will be held 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, August 15, 2021, at the funeral home. Those in attendance, if not vaccinated, are asked to please wear a mask.
Lynnea grew up in Waterloo with her three brothers Steve, David, and Joel. She learned about her parents’ family through annual family reunions. She became very interested in music in high school. She played the violin in the orchestra, sang in the choir, and spent countless hours practicing in the Waterloo Drum & Bugle Corps. She worked part time in a small restaurant where she, supposedly accidently, dropped fish in a customer’s lap. That customer was her future husband, Bruce. She attended the University of Northern Iowa in 1972 and eventually graduated with a degree in music from Simpson College in Indianola.
Lynnea and Bruce were married August 26, 1972, and made their first home in Milo. She began teaching vocal music at Southeast Warren in the early ‘80s and quickly became a passionate and active member of the community. Lynnea never met a child she wasn’t willing to help and for the next 38 years, she spent her life dedicated to her students. They were her “Superstars”, and she had a way of making every one of them feel like just that, a Superstar. Lynnea was a performer through and through, both on the stage and in her community. She loved watching her students succeed and all their hard work culminated in her many programs and performances. For countless students, she became the go-to mentor to help them navigate the troubles they faced. She was a champion for the underdog and fought relentlessly to help them find success in whatever it was they were pursuing.
After “retirement” from Southeast Warren in 2016, Lynnea couldn’t avoid her passion for helping children. She then went to work at Victory Christian Academy teaching vocal music two days a week. She was so proud to be teaching children and sometimes grandchildren of former students. With the added time on her hands, she became involved with various committees in her Church and Community. Lynnea’s greatest pride, though, was in her own children and grandchildren, or her “Grands", as she often referred to them. She was happiest when she was with her family all together under one roof and was a champion of making sure that happened as often as possible.
Lynnea lived a life of faith, service and dedication. She was happy to share her faith, regardless of the situation, and recognized just how truly blessed she was. She is survived by her beloved husband, Bruce Young; children, Neal (Krissy) Young, Nathan (Brianna) Young, Wade (Sarah) Young, and Lindsay (Jordan) McDonald; grandchildren, Stella and Rowan Young, Ryder Swim, Jonas and Ruby Young, and Joy McDonald; siblings, Steve (Sue) Bateman, and David (Cindy) Bateman and beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jean and Jerry Bateman and a brother Joel Bateman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to the Milo Hometown Pride Committee. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
