Marie Champlin
(March 12, 1939 - August 27, 2021)

Marie Champlin was born March 12, 1939 at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry, IA and passed away Friday, August 27, 2021 at the Indianola Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home. Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with visitation held prior to services from 9 to 10 a.m. Burial will follow services in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Marie was the daughter of Lloyd and Eva Frantum. She attended Gardiner Consolidated School, Kindergarten through 8th grade; Minburn High School for 1½ years; then moved to Woodward, where she graduated from Woodward High School in 1957. On November 27, 1963, she was united in marriage to Kenneth James Champlin in Indianola, IA and to this union was born daughter, Doreen and son, James. They lived in Indianola, moved to Missouri in 1973, then in 1981 purchased the Champlin Welding and Repair Shop in Indianola.
Marie worked on the farm milking cows and raising sheep, hogs and chickens. She also drove a school bus, when needed, in Indianola and in Princeton, MO. She loved her garden, flowers and canned for the family. When she lived in Missouri, many visitors from Iowa enjoyed home cooked meals, fresh garden vegetables and fried chicken.
Marie also did the business accounting for Champlin Welding and Repair Shop besides working at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines in the Administrative Department, Telecommunication Department and Admissions. She also worked for Blank Children’s Hospital as Department Secretary before retiring. She also worked part-time for Noble Ford in Indianola as a Porter and then in the Administrative Department.
Marie was a member of Bethel Methodist Church in Missouri, where she was the pianist before moving back to Iowa. She became a member of the Indianola Christian Church, where she was the pianist and organist and taught Sunday School class. She then joined Farmers Chapel United Methodist Church in rural Indianola, where she was the pianist and sang in the choir. She also participated in Tai Chi at the Indianola Activity Center and enjoyed potluck meals and other activities. Marie loved to walk about anywhere in Indianola, volunteer at the Indianola Good Samaritan, visit neighbors, and help out when anyone needed help.
She leaves her daughter, Doreen (Rodney) Sutherland; son, James (Carol) Champlin; step-children, Kenney Lee (Barbara) Champlin and Cheryle Pfeffer; five grandchildren, Emily Sutherland, Nathan (Hannah), Jonathan, Brandon and Samantha Champlin; great-grandson, Timothy Champlin; step-grandchildren; step great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Lewis (Joyce) Champlin and Dean Curtis; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth in 1993, grandchild Ethan William Sutherland, step-son Lewis Dean Champlin, step-daughter Phyllis Ellen Castellaw, parents, grandparents, sisters-in-law Ilka Harvey, Dorothy Hawkins and Betty Curtis and brother-in-law Marcus Champlin.
Marie’s family would like to thank the Indianola Good Samaritan and St. Croix Hospice for their care and support during this time. Memorials may be given in her name to the Indianola Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home.
