William Everett Moffitt Jr.
(February 13, 1925 - December 1, 2021)

William E. Moffitt Jr., also known as Bill to the people in Indianola, Iowa, was born February 13, 1925 to William E. Moffitt and Emma (Ramsey) Moffitt, near Ackworth, Iowa. He was raised with three brothers, Homer, Leland and Carroll, on a hundred-acre farm raising hogs, cattle, corn and hay. The boys attended grade school at Ginder’s, which was a one room schoolhouse and short walk from their farm house. The boys helped milk cows at night and in the morning and sold cream to buy groceries. After the boys finished eighth grade, the one room schoolhouse closed down. William, Homer and Leland then attended a Quaker school called Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio. After graduation, William went back to help on the family farm, as his father had health issues and had to give up farming and went into real estate. The brothers continued with the farming. William decided to leave the farm and marry his high school sweetheart Anna Mae (Starbuck) Moffitt. They bought a 108-acre farm near Ackworth and raised hogs, corn, hay, milked cows and raised four children, Raymond, Daryl, Patsy and Dennis.
William was a strong believer that God created earthworms to enrich the soil, so was an organic farmer all his life. While farming, William also worked twenty years for Godwin Bros. and twenty years for Hornaday’s in Indianola. He served on the Ackworth Town Council, was Mayor of Ackworth, and a member of the Ackworth Cemetery Association for many years.
After retiring from farming in 2000, William kept an acre of land, built a new house, and sold the farm and farmhouse. William and his wife then decided to try a winter in Texas and loved it, so bought a park model and spent the next nineteen winters in Palm Shadows, near Donna, Texas.
Keeping up with things around the house became too much for them to handle, so they sold their house and moved into The Village, a retirement community, in 2012, where they met many new friends. William enjoyed playing pool, table tennis, bingo, shuffleboard, and board games.
William believed that the time had come, if people wanted to live a long and healthy life, they needed to eat organic food and exercise.
William is preceded in death by his wife Anna Mae Moffitt; parents; brothers, Carroll, Homer and Leland; son, Raymond; great-grandson, Kaden Tjossem. Survivors include his children, Daryl (Rosemary), Patsy and Dennis (Debbie); daughter-in-law, Alberta Moffitt; ten grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial will follow in the Ackworth Cemetery, Ackworth. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, December 3 at the funeral home, where family will be present to greet friends. Memorials may be given in his name to Ackworth Friends Church.
